Do Most People With Vitiligo Have Hashimoto’s?
A MyVitiligoTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was just diagnosed with V last week after having the pigmentation problem for a probably 5 or so years. Earlier this year, I requested a full thyroid panel because I was experiencing hypothyroid-esque symptoms. The only thing to come back abnormal (and it was very mild) was my T3. It was low. Therefore, they diagnosed me with Euthyroid Sick Syndrome. I’ve been taking 10mcg of Cytomel and have since felt better
Fast forward to this last week. The Dermatologist (first one I’ve ever seen) tells… read more

My experience with doctors and vitiligo is they don’t really know much about it and don’t really care. I have tried to educate myself at first but it was discouraging, no real good news only bad. I too am a need to know why person, so I tried to figure it out since I know of no one related that has vitiligo. I concluded it was Stress, but who really knows - and I am not sure it matters because this stuff doesn’t go away.

I have hypothyroidism and V as well. To complicate matters I also have Schambergs disease which causes blood to pool in my capillaries causing brown spots from my knees down. So I'm dealing with dark spots and splotches and white patches at the same time. I'm on a blood thinner due to a mechanical mitral valve. I struggle at times to stay positive.

I was told by a second dermatologist I saw that since I have Hashimoto’s (which I’ve had for over 15 years) I was predisposed to have Vitiligo. I actually have (that I know of) 3 autoimmune diseases/disorders/conditions. I had my blood work done after finding out I have vitiligo and found out my thyroid is working properly. Weirdly enough I do have a few symptoms of Hashimoto’s. My endocrinologist wants to do a biopsy of my goiters before he’d suggest meds. I haven’t had a chance to do that yet. So basically if you have Hashimoto’s you’d get vitiligo but not sure of the percentage of that. Also, found out if you get vitiligo when your older you have a great chance of already having another autoimmune disease.

Same here. I haven't been to a dermatologist since 2008 but your comment about Schambergs Disease gave me some insight I didn't know I needed. My dark spots showed up about 2 years ago. Thank you for that information. I'll seek out a dermatologist now. It is increasingly hard to stay positive and want to hide all your skin at the same time. We just gotta keep on keeping on ya know?!?!?
