I strongly think it’s genetic. Maybe they haven’t identified a specific gene or blood test.
I only say this cause my mom told me my dad had the same.
I pray it is NOT hereditary because I do NOT want to pass this on to anyone that I love.
DjRichards: In my family, There isn't anyone on my Mother's side nor my Father's side that I am aware of who has vitiligo, except me. My children do not have it but my oldest grandson does. My siblings do not either, but my niece's son, ( my sister's only grandchild) does, he was born with a big white spot on the front of his head just inside his hair line so he has a circular spot/patch of super platinum hair, even though he has blonde hair, it is very noticeable. He is only 2 years old. My grandson who is turning 10 in 3 weeks had his 1st white spot about the size of a 50 cent coin appear on his outer wrist when he was 6. He has several small spots now. I was 6 or 7 when i Mother noticed some white spots on me. Was not formerly diagnosed until I was 13 by a dermatologist. So somehow it seems to have started with me and seems to be skipping generations.
I have been told and have experienced vitiligo as being 'inherited'. Some believe it may 'skip' a generation for whatever reason however, my biological father, his mother and some of his siblings all had vitiligo. I have vitiligo from age 12 and it continues. Only one of my children out of four, actually has signs of vitiligo. A beautiful 'white' streak of hair amongst her dark hair. So far, my grandchildren do not have any signs of vitiligo. I joke with them all and tell that I have enough vitiligo to cover the family! As time goes on and I educate myself further about vitiligo, it is apparent that not all are born with signs of vitiligo and it is also apparent that other conditions can have effect on a person having vitiligo when no one else in their family does.
To me, I hope it's not genetic cause if it was that then our whole family would be an example but in the family of ours am the only one with vitrigo. Thanks
